Olympic Style farewell to JKCC and welcome to All Saints Church of England Academy, Plymouth

Both students and staff are enjoying the last week of term by taking part in Olympic style friendly competition.  On Thursday, they will say farewell to John Kitto Community College as it looks to become All Saints Academy, Plymouth from 1 September 2010.

Plymouth Olympic diver Tonia Couch, a former John Kitto  pupil, helped the school launch its week of activities on Monday.  Students are participating in their new team colours; the academy will have four 'learning families' which are Avon, Dart, Plym and Tavy.  The family that accrues the most points over the week will get a trophy.

The aim of the event is to use the Olympic theme and values to aid the transition for students and staff as we change to academy status.  All of the activities and sports are judged on the key values such as respect, friendship, determination, excellence, courage and teamwork.

Activities include tug-of-war, team building sessions and a trip to Woodlands Leisure Park. Despite the mixed weather, students are thoroughly enjoying this wonderful celebration.  Student Luke Francis, 14, said 'We are celebrating the end of one school and the beginning of the next.

The new academy will be led by Pete Grainger who will become principal.

We send all students and staff every good wish as they embrace this new beginning.

Year 7 Fashion Show with a difference

Wednesday saw the third annual Integrated Curriculum Trash Fashion Show.  Every student in Year 7 has been working really hard to create a piece of unique fashion clothing from recycled items as part of their IC lessons.

Students then had the fantastic opportunity to show their work to the rest of the year group by walking down the catwalk.  Mr Brake said that this year's show was the best yet and was really impressed by the high standard of design and student committment to the project.

Well done to all who took part.

'Aim Higher' in Fashion Project at TR2

Rachel Best, Parent Support Advisor based at JKCC reports...

A group of enthusiastic parents and JKCC students worked together over a six week period with designer Meier Williams at the TR2 studios to produce a stunning costume each from recycled clothes.

Everyone was eager to learn new skills to produce their eye-catching outfit; cutting, hand-sewing and getting to grips with an electric sewing machine.  Next came the make-over photo session for the 'In Fashion' magazine.

Creative make-up artist, Karen Mills, made everyone look fantastic adding glitter, flowers and jewels as a final touch.  Hair was creatively styled in minutes by stylist, Dan.  Finally, the models were ready for the photo-shoot in the grounds of TR2.

The next photo session took place in the National Trust gardens of Antony House on a beautiful sunny day.  The group looked out of this world in costumes made out of coloured plastic bags!

JKCC Art Department and National Marine Aquarium

Year 10 BTEC Art and Design students have been working with the National Marine Aquarium to produce a spectacular exhibition for British fish.

Students have worked really hard and created hangings and sculptures which can be seen around the British marine waters tank.  The exhibition is running from now throughout the summer.  We strongly recommend students, parents, carers and staff to view it.  Year 10 Art students have made a big committment to this project and have taken a lot of care and pride in their work to ensure that this is a great success.  They are a real credit to us.

Congratulations to all Year 10 Art students who will be going back to the Aquarium on Wednesday, 14 July to see all their work displayed.

Mini Olympics held at JKCC

Helen Smith, Schools Sport Co-ordinator reports....

In the morning, we invited 16 of the more able Year 2's up to JKCC for a morning of competitive, challenging activities.  The activities were run by JKCC sports leaders and included football skills, skipping, speed bounce, javelin throws and many more.  At the end of the morning, when all the points were added up, Shakespeare emerged as the winners with Manadon as second place and Knowle as third.

In the afternoon, the rest of the Year 2 pupils from all six schools came for an afternoon of activitites.  This was based on participating and getting active rather than competition.

It was an exhausting day for all involved but thoroughly enjoyable.  Thanks to all the schools for supporting this event - it must have broken the school record for the number of six year olds in two school halls at any one time!

Students and Staff vote for the identity of the new Academy

In September 2010, John Kitto Community College will become All Saints Church of England Academy, Plymouth.

A group of students have been working with agency Happy Giraffe to develop ideas for the new Academy Brand.  They were asked the questions 'What does becoming an Academy mean to you?' and 'What is a brand?' and produced themes, mood boards and logo ideas.

After much discussion, creativity and energy the students produced three potential themes under the titles of Target, Confidence and Beacon.  The themes concentrated on images, colours and words.

Students and Staff voted for their favourite theme for the new Academy Brand and the winning theme was Beacon.

Here is the winning Beacon logo:

JKCC students graduate from employer-backed Career Academy programme

On Thursday, 29 April nine students graduated from the John Kitto Career Academy, a two year education programme which aims to raise the aspirations of 16 to 19 year olds and boost their employability skills by giving them real life experiences of the workplace.  Over 600 young people from schools and colleges across the UK have graduated from the programme this year.

Working with an impressive network of over 800 employers, the programme provides once in a lifetime workplace experiences for teenagers, many from diverse urban backgrounds and areas of social need, who would not normally have access to such opportunities.  Completing the Career Academy programme greatly improves the students' chances of progressing on to higher education or straight into a job, at a time of real concern about the employment and education prospects for young people in the UK.

The students received their certificates from Sir Win Bischoff, Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group and Chair of Career Academies UK, and Sarah MacKenzie, Head of HR at the McGraw HIll Group of Compaies and Member of Career Academies UK Advisory Board.

James McCreary, Career Academies UK's recently appointed Chief Executive, and motivational speaker 'Action Jackson', offered words of encouragement and top tips on how young people can fulfil their ambitions and achieve future career success.

Helen Rickett, Career Academy Co-ordinator said, "It was a great day for the students.  Their hard work throughout the two year course was rewarded with a ceremony dedicated to congratulating them all on their achievements".

James McCreary said, "At a time when youth unemployment is at a record high, graduation day celebrates the achievements of Career Academy students who have recognised the need to work hard and be armed with the skills and vital experience needed to help them get ahead and stay ahead.  We wish the Career Academy class of 2010 at John Kitto all the best for the future."
